Z2: MITOCHONDRIA POWER

“Wala yan sa pana, nasa indian yan.”

Pacing the 21K at the Peñafrancia Marathon reminded me how training is often misunderstood. Many runners think that running fast in training automatically translates to racing fast. In reality, endurance performance is less about peak speed in workouts and more about consistent time spent in Zone 2, where the aerobic system is trained to work efficiently.

Zone 2 running is like providing high-quality, structured data for a machine learning model. When we train at the right intensity, we’re feeding the body clean, usable input that helps it adapt. The mitochondria become stronger, fat metabolism improves, and overall efficiency increases. Just like in ML, where messy or sparse data leads to weak predictions, chasing random fast training runs without a solid aerobic base leads to burnout and unreliable results.

Many athletes focus on chasing quick 5K records or fast training splits. That’s similar to overfitting a model, optimizing for short-term metrics but failing to generalize when it matters, like in long races. Endurance isn’t forged in those bursts; it’s built through patient, repetitive cycles of Zone 2 work, the same way robust models are built from countless iterations on solid data.

My constant reminder to myself.

New watches, flashy gear, or even advanced prediction tools like PacePro can’t replace that. They’re algorithms giving guidance, but they’re only as good as the foundation they rely on. Just as models without quality data collapse, runners without a strong aerobic base plateau no matter how advanced their gadgets are.

“The future belongs to those who learn more skills and combine them in creative ways.”

As the saying goes, “Wala yan sa pana, nasa indian yan.” It’s not about the tools, it’s about how consistently you train the system, whether it’s a body for endurance or a machine for intelligence.
